During a speech in Arizona, President Biden criticized Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, referring to him as one of the “extremists” in Congress who lack knowledge on the topics they discuss.
The remark was made as Biden condemned Donald Trump and his allies in Congress while paying tribute to former Senator John McCain.
Although Tuberville was not mentioned by name, the President labeled him as “one guy in Alabama” and “one MAGA senator” during the speech in Tempe.
Biden continued to criticize Tuberville for his opposition to new Department of Defense policies that provide travel reimbursement for service members seeking abortions in areas where it is illegal.
Referring directly to Tuberville, Biden stated, “one guy in Alabama is holding up the promotion of every — hundreds of these officers. Frankly, these extremists have no idea what the hell they’re talking about.”
Discussing the strength of the U.S. military, Biden emphasized that it is the most powerful and diverse military in history, countering accusations of weakness and being “woke” from the opposition.
Earlier this month, Tuberville criticized the U.S. Navy for being “woke” due to “people doing poems on aircraft carriers” during an interview on Fox News.
Recently, nominations and confirmations for top military positions have made progress, but Tuberville’s hold remains.
Gen. C.Q. Brown has been nominated as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Randy George has been confirmed as Army Chief of Staff, and Gen. Eric Smith has been confirmed as commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, temporarily breaking the impasse.
However, Tuberville’s hold on the promotions remains.
In comparison to the lack of Republican outrage at Trump’s comments suggesting the execution of Gen. Mark Milley, Biden highlighted the silence when Tuberville announced his hold in February.
The President expressed disappointment that hardly any Republicans called out Tuberville’s actions, which not only affect military leaders but also their families and children.
