Jenin City in Palestine Targeted by Israeli Military Strikes

The Israeli military has launched an extensive counterterrorism effort in the Jenin area of the occupied West Bank, which is known for its Palestinian militancy. In the early hours of Monday, airstrikes were carried out, and ground forces were deployed toward the city. Initial reports indicate that at least four Palestinian militants were killed in the opening strikes.

The military targeted a joint operations center used by militants in the Jenin refugee camp. This center stored weapons and explosives and provided shelter to individuals accused of carrying out attacks on Israelis. Israel’s last extensive airstrikes in the West Bank occurred during the second Palestinian intifada in the early 2000s.

While militant groups in Gaza have been launching rockets into Israel for over two decades, Palestinian militant groups in the occupied West Bank have not developed similar capabilities. However, a rocket was recently launched from the Jenin area but exploded shortly after takeoff.

A raid by Israeli forces in Jenin on June 19 resulted in deadly confrontations. Five Palestinians, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed, and numerous others were injured. Eight members of the Israeli security forces were also wounded.

Residents of the northern West Bank are currently experiencing a volatile mix of violence. There are attacks on Israelis by armed local Palestinian militias, frequent arrest raids by the Israeli military, and reprisals by extremist Jewish settlers targeting Palestinian villages.

Palestinian security forces mostly avoid the hotbeds of militancy, which has created a vacuum of control. Members of the right-wing coalition government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been advocating for a more aggressive military response to the attacks on Israelis.

This year has seen a high number of Palestinian deaths in the West Bank, with over 140 fatalities in the past six months. Most of these deaths occurred during armed clashes in military raids, though innocent bystanders were also affected. It has also been a deadly year for Israelis, with nearly 30 killed in Arab attacks.

Following the June 19 raid in Jenin, Palestinian gunmen killed four Israeli civilians near the Jewish settlement of Eli. These gunmen were affiliated with Hamas, the Islamic militant group that seized control of Gaza in 2007.

In another incident, an Israeli drone strike killed three Palestinian militants who had attacked an Israeli position in the northern West Bank and carried out attacks against Jewish settlements.

The killing of the four Israelis at Eli led to retributive actions by Israeli extremists, who vandalized Palestinian towns and villages, causing destruction to homes, cars, and fields.
