Sept. 26 (UPI) — A Canadian man achieved an astonishing feat by devouring 50 of the world’s hottest chili peppers in just 6 minutes and 49.2 seconds. What’s more surprising is that he didn’t stop there- he went on to consume an additional 85 peppers, setting a new record.
Renowned vegan speed-eater, Mike Jack, made headlines by taking the Guinness World Record for finishing 50 Carolina Reapers within a record-breaking time. These fiery peppers boast an average of 1.64 million Scoville Heat Units, making them hundreds of times spicier than jalapeno peppers.
Jack completed his 50th pepper within an impressive 6 minutes and 49.2 seconds. However, even after his record-breaking attempt, he continued to devour peppers until he reached an astonishing total of 135.
This remarkable achievement earned Jack the prestigious second spot on the League of Fire Reaper Challenge leaderboard. This leader board keeps track of individuals who attempt to consume the largest quantities of these ultra-spicy peppers in a single sitting.
Despite his 20-year journey of building tolerance to spicy food, Jack confessed that he still experiences discomfort while devouring the peppers.
“The initial shock of spiciness is intense. The second one doesn’t seem as bad, but each one after that gets hotter and hotter as the peppers touch new places in your mouth,” shared Jack with Guinness World Records.
However, the pain in the mouth pales in comparison to the discomfort in Jack’s stomach.
“I get bad cramps. It feels like someone is squeezing and twisting my guts,” he claimed. “Your mind is telling you to stop, but you have to convince yourself to keep pushing through.”
