A Palestinian rights demonstration took place on Saturday afternoon near the Federal Building in West Los Angeles, with the police closely monitoring to ensure peace. The demonstration, named “Rally for Return: ALL OUT FOR GAZA,” began at around 12:30 p.m. in front of the Consulate General of Israel on Wilshire Blvd. The Palestinian Youth Movement organized similar events in various North American cities during Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.
Reporters estimated that the crowd size was over 1,000, with participants marching along Wilshire Boulevard.
“West LA Div is monitoring a demonstration near the Federal Building, working with the group organizers to preserve First Amendment Rights,” stated the LAPD PIO on X. “There will be traffic impacts on Wilshire Blvd. from Federal to Veteran (avenues).”
LAPD Officer Drake Madison informed City News Service that as of around 4:20 p.m., the event remained peaceful. However, Emily Holshouser from the Southern California News Group reported, “Things got very tense in the crowd when a man holding an Israeli flag and wearing a kippah approached some people. Police intervened and separated everyone after a few minutes.”
At one point during the demonstration, tear gas or a similar agent was released. Some of the demonstrators wore or carried Palestinian flags and held signs that read “Resistance is Not Terrorism,” “Long Live Palestine,” and “Free All Palestinian Political Prisoners. End the Occupation.”
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 2:42 p.m., closing the northbound and southbound Wilshire Boulevard on- and off-ramps from the San Diego (405) Freeway.
The LAPD announced at approximately 3:45 p.m. that “Wilshire Blvd is open to traffic. Intermittent closures on side streets will occur to allow pedestrians to cross at intersections.”
