Renowned author Walter Isaacson, who is currently working on an upcoming biography about Elon Musk, recently shared an excerpt of the book on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. (You can read the excerpt here.)
The excerpt focuses on Musk’s courtship with Grimes and reveals some unconventional flirting methods employed by the Tesla CEO.
According to the excerpt, during their second date, Grimes compared Musk to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional wizard Gandalf, which prompted Musk to put her knowledge to the test with a rapid-fire trivia quiz on ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Fortunately, she passed the test, which mattered a lot to Musk.
In another unexpected move, while driving to a restaurant, Musk showed off the capabilities of his Tesla by accelerating rapidly, taking his hands off the wheel, covering his eyes, and letting Grimes experience Autopilot. Although this maneuver goes against the advice given in Tesla’s Model Y owner’s manual, Grimes found it impressive and likened the experience to a scene from a Marvel movie.

The excerpt also details the couple’s first date, where Musk invited Grimes to visit the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. Walking the factory floor and watching Musk fix things was Musk’s idea of a good date.
Interestingly, during their courtship, Grimes gifted Musk with a box of animal bones she had collected. However, the relationship came to an end in 2021 after three years, but not before they welcomed two children together — a son named X Æ A-12 in 2020, and a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl in 2021.
Let’s hope Musk doesn’t try out any of these stunts on his kids when they grow up.
