An inmate at the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta was killed by another inmate, authorities said Wednesday.
Rodney Ronald Sanchez, 61, was accused of killing the unidentified male inmate during an altercation Tuesday, according to Sgt. Richard Carroll of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Carroll said the inmate was found unconscious with injuries at about 2:35 p.m. Tuesday, prompting correctional personnel to administer medical aid before paramedics showed up.
Despite those efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead, according to Carroll. An identification was pending notification of family.
Investigators from the Corrections Intelligence Bureau and the Central Homicide Unit identified Sanchez as the suspect and accused him of homicide, Carroll said.
In addition to suspected homicide, Sanchez remains in custody on suspicion of aggravated sexual assault on a minor. He was held on $1 million bail.
