Important Dates and Services Affected in September and October

Passengers all over the UK are set to experience more disruptions as the train drivers union Aslef and Tube workers union RMT announce additional industrial action. This move comes as members of Aslef strategically time their latest walkouts to coincide with the Conservative Party Conference. The union, which has been engaged in a pay dispute for 16 months, has already called for 12 one-day strikes.

The upcoming strikes will result in 16 train operating companies having to cancel all services, and a separate ban on overtime will significantly disrupt the network.

Mick Whelan, the general secretary of Aslef, expressed his regrets about the need to take this action. He stated, “We do not wish to lose a day’s pay or disrupt passengers. However, the government and the employers have left us with no choice. Our members have not received a pay raise since 2019, while prices have skyrocketed. It is only fair that train drivers can afford what they could buy four years ago.”

In addition to these strikes, London Underground workers have also announced fresh strikes, fueling their own dispute over job cuts and working conditions. Mick Lynch, the general secretary of the union, emphasized the frustration of the station staff, saying, “Enough is enough. Our livelihoods are being threatened, and our terms and conditions are under attack. We play a vital role in helping vulnerable passengers access the network safely, and these job cuts and attacks on conditions will result in more unstaffed stations and rising passenger anger. We call on Mayor Sadiq Khan to urgently address this matter.”

When will the strikes occur?

The Aslef union has scheduled strikes on the following dates:

  • Saturday September 30 – train strike
  • Wednesday October 4 – train and Tube strike
  • Friday October 6 – Tube strike

Members will also stage an overtime ban across the rail network on the following dates:

  • Friday September 29
  • From Monday October 2 to Friday October 6
