Idris Elba Describes Filming Inside a Plane for Six Months as ‘Claustrophobic’

Idris Elba, known for his role in Luther, recently shared his experience filming action sequences inside a replica airplane for Apple TV+’s new series, Hijack. Elba described the six-month-long shoot as both “claustrophobic” and “exhilarating.” The show follows Elba’s character, Sam Nelson, a corporate negotiator on a hijacked flight from Dubai to London.

During the series premiere in London, Elba discussed the meticulous set design of the “intimate” airplane replica, emphasizing its intentional discomfort. He explained that the lack of space inside a plane posed a challenge for action sequences, as there was no room to fight. Despite the difficulties, Elba found enjoyment in the experience and praised the team’s ability to create an authentic sense of danger.

Elba also compared his character, Sam Nelson, to his iconic role as DCI Luther, highlighting their shared intellectual nature. However, he noted that Nelson relies more on his brains, while Luther is more inclined towards brawn.

Filming in the confined space of the airplane set left Elba feeling as if he had embarked on a journey to Mars. He humorously remarked that after six months, it seemed as though he was still on the never-ending flight. Elba’s co-star, Archie Panjabi, and his mother, Eve Elba, accompanied him at the premiere.

The first two episodes of Hijack will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 28, followed by subsequent episodes released every Wednesday until August 2.
