Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest canceled second year in a row

HUNTER — For the second year in a row the Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest has been canceled amid a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Oktoberfest this year at Hunter,” the Greene County ski center announced on its Instagram page several days ago.

“The decision to cancel the event absolutely wasn’t one that we took lightly. Oktoberfest is something that we look forward to every year but as the date drew closer, we simply weren’t 100% certain that we would be able provide the experience our guests have grown to love and expect, so we decided to cancel,” Adam White, a spokesman for Vail Resorts, Hunter’s parent company, said in an email.

The longstanding event, which typically took place over four weekends in September and October, featured Bavarian-style entertainment, food and beer.

Despite the cancellation, Hunter officials stressed that their Zipline ride remains open Fridays through Sundays and they will have a food truck and beer available at the mountain’s base area during four weekends: Sept. 25-26, Oct. 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17.

They say they don’t yet know what the 2022 plans are.

The cancellation will be a blow to the surrounding community as the Oktoberfests were known to bring in several thousand visitors on each day they were held.

Despite that, town leaders realize that safety had to take a priority.

“They’re just trying to make everybody safe,” said Hunter Supervisor Darryl Legg.

Oktoberfest is the second ski-and-beer themed event to fall prey to COVID-19 this year.

Earlier this month, the organizers of the annual Northeast Ski & Craft Beer Showcase that was scheduled for Nov. 5-7 in Albany also canceled for the second year in a row.

They plan to hold the event in 2022.
