Christ the King Parish in Hollywood is set to be designated as the new Archdiocesan Divine Mercy Shrine in a Mass on Saturday officiated by Archbishop José H. Gomez, auxiliary bishops, and priests.
Since September 2003, Christ the King has been the home of the only image of the Divine Mercy blessed by St. Pope John Paul II in the United States. This sacred image was brought to the parish from Poland.
Due to its blessing by a saint, the image is considered a relic, a religious artifact of significant historical value.
“We are extremely excited to witness this momentous occasion for the faithful of Los Angeles,” expressed Reverend Juan Ochoa, the pastor of Christ the King and rector of the shrine. “We believe that this shrine will serve as a guiding light of hope and inspiration for future generations.”
“The Divine Mercy Shrine stands as a testament to our dedication in spreading the message of God’s limitless mercy and love to all.”
The shrine has been meticulously designed to provide a tranquil and reflective space for worship, prayer, and spiritual growth, as stated by Yannina Diaz, the senior media relations manager of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
In her diary entry on February 22, 1931, the Polish nun Maria Faustyna Kowalska described a vision of Jesus in her room at a convent in Plock, Poland. In the vision, Jesus appeared adorned in a white garment with red and pale rays emanating from his heart. He instructed her to paint an image according to the vision, along with the words, “Jesus, I trust in You.”
This image eventually became known as the Divine Mercy image.
Maria Faustyna Kowalska was canonized by Pope John Paul II in the year 2000.
The Mass at 5:30 p.m. will be live-streamed on the church’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ctklosangeles, and YouTube page, www.youtube.com/channel/UCj64Bocfwrl_gWCEw5q4m2A.
