He Lost 30 Years of Memories. His Wife Came Up With a Plan

The second-scariest moment of Kristy Mackenzie’s life came when a driver ran a stop sign and collided with the motorcycle carrying her and her husband Andrew on June 19. They were thrown 60 feet from the bike and suffered horrific injuries: Andrew, 58, broke two vertebrae, a pelvic bone, shoulder blade, five ribs, and his nose, while Kristy, 54, broke her back, hip, shoulder blade, and seven ribs. But the scariest moment was still to come. When Andrew woke up in a hospital bed in June, he believed it was 1993. “He knew me, but I could see him looking through me,” Kristy of Virginia tells People in an exclusive interview. “I tell you, that’s the scariest day of my life … I didn’t know how I was going to get him back.”

Though the couple had been married 37 years—Kristy was a high school junior when they wed—Andrew could remember only eight of them. But Kristy came up with a plan. She convinced doctors to allow the couple to recover in the same hospital room. “I said, ‘If you let us be together, he will get better.’ And that’s when it started coming around.” During hours sitting together, Kristy says they fell in love all over again. Andrew’s memory also returned.

After 11 days in the hospital and another 11 at a rehab facility, the couple headed home. A month later, as they walked along a beach in North Carolina—forgoing wheelchairs and walkers for the first time since the crash—Andrew proposed for the second time. At Nine.com.au, Bronte Gossling argues the story is worthy of a reboot of The Vow. (Read the full piece to learn about the “perfect” vow renewal that followed.)
