Government’s breach of the social contract with the nation

England’s potential implementation of Plan B Covid restrictions may not be as significant as it sounds, according to Allison Pearson and Liam Halligan, hosts of the popular weekly podcast, Planet Normal. In a recent discussion panel with the Local Government Association, Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty openly questioned whether the public, who have enjoyed a taste of freedom since July, would be willing to give up their liberties again.

Halligan, referring to leaked footage and the government’s response, believes that the double standards displayed by officials have eroded the social contract. He states, “It’s one rule for them and another for the rest of us. The signs of shenanigans and rule-breaking have severely damaged the social contract.”

Pearson raises doubts about the intention behind the Wednesday night press conference, where the Prime Minister announced the upcoming requirement for people to work from home starting Monday. She suggests that this decision may be more about the government’s attempt to regain public trust after recent scandals, rather than being driven by concerns over the Omicron variant.

Joining Pearson and Halligan on this episode of Planet Normal is Professor Gordon Wishart, a renowned breast cancer specialist. Professor Wishart, the Chief Medical Officer at Check4Cancer and a Visiting Professor of Cancer Surgery at Anglia Ruskin University, argues that returning to pre-pandemic “normal” in terms of cancer services would be futile, as these services were already failing before the pandemic. Instead, he advocates for aiming for a “super normal” standard. Additionally, he reveals that cancer waiting time targets were previously met due to the goodwill of staff conducting extra clinics, but this goodwill has now been exhausted.
