GOP Report Accuses Mayorkas of Deliberate Negligence in Handling Border Crisis

Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee have released a report accusing DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of deliberately neglecting his duties to the country as he pursues an “open-borders agenda.” Chairman Mark Green initiated an investigation into Mayorkas’ “dereliction of duty” earlier this year in response to criticism regarding the administration’s handling of the ongoing border crisis. Despite encountering over 1.7 million individuals in 2021 and over 2.4 million in 2022, the number of encounters has decreased in May and June.

The report accuses Mayorkas of disregarding effective policies and implementing an open-borders policy agenda, while ignoring several laws passed by Congress. It further states that he has undermined the separation of powers and shirked his responsibility to enforce laws and respect the rulings of the federal judiciary.

Among the allegations in the report is the claim that Mayorkas abused humanitarian parole, exceeded the lawful basis for expanding parole, failed to comply with court orders, and canceled policies such as border wall construction and Title 42 and Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). The report also highlights a decrease in removals and accuses him of ignoring the law by allowing the presence of illegal aliens in the country.

While some Republicans have called for Mayorkas’ impeachment, Chairman Green has not yet endorsed such a move, stating that the focus of the investigation is on uncovering the facts. The Biden administration has responded by pointing to the drop in encounters at the border since the end of the Title 42 order, despite predictions of an increase. They attribute this drop to measures put in place by the administration and the enforcement of immigration laws.

Mayorkas is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, where he is expected to face tough questions from Republicans regarding the border crisis. The investigation into Mayorkas is ongoing, and the release of the report marks the end of the first phase.

Despite pushback from Democrats on the committee, who label the attempt to impeach Mayorkas as baseless, the scrutiny of the secretary is likely to continue. The interim report published by Republicans is just the first phase, with the second phase of the investigation already underway. The House Judiciary Committee hearing presents another opportunity for Mayorkas to address concerns raised by Republicans.
