Google Resolves Android 14 Multi-User Bug on Pixel Phones with New Fix

Google’s November update is on its way to Pixel phones, bringing relief to those experiencing a critical bug related to multiple user profiles. This update, highlighted by 9to5Google, addresses an issue where devices with multiple users enabled would either display a lack of storage or get stuck in a reboot loop. The bug specifically impacted Pixel 6 phones and later models running Android 14. The update will start rolling out to Pixel phones today, with the rollout continuing through the next week.

This particular bug, as reported, caused significant problems for affected users. Some individuals could not access their media storage, while others were trapped in a continuous reboot cycle that required a factory reset. For those experiencing the former issue, this update should restore access to their device’s media. However, the outlook is not as positive for those stuck in a reboot cycle. A previous update mentioned that the fix being developed by Google “may not enable data to be recovered for devices that are repeatedly rebooting.” While you will regain use of your phone, it is crucial to have backed up your data beforehand.

This bug affected Pixel phones with multiple user profiles, including child users, guests, and restricted profiles. However, it did not impact individuals who used multiple Google accounts as the primary user on a device. This distinction is fortunate because both of my Pixel 8 review units are logged into my work and personal Gmail accounts. While the issue may not have been widespread, it certainly caused significant inconvenience for those affected.

As of last week, Google advised users of Pixel phones running Android 14 to avoid creating or logging into additional user profiles. With the release of this update, it should now be safe to do so; however, it is advisable to back up your data before proceeding, just to be on the safe side.
