In a week overshadowed by Rishi Sunak’s reset of net zero policy, Rachel Reeves emphasized that Labour is not an “anti-motorist” party. The announcement made by Mr. Sunak on Wednesday confirmed that the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be delayed from 2030 to 2035. In contrast, Labour has stated its intention to reinstate the 2030 ban.
The party’s leadership has acknowledged its loss in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election in July, a race where victory was anticipated due to Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, expanding the ultra-low emissions zone. This expansion has resulted in motorists with vehicles that do not meet green requirements being charged £12.50 per day.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Ms. Reeves stated, “The price of electric vehicles is continuously decreasing, which is a positive development. No one is discussing a ban on petrol and diesel cars; the second-hand market will remain vibrant in the years to come.
“We are certainly not against motorists. The price of electric vehicles is consistently dropping. However, I have received numerous messages from business leaders in the past 24 to 48 hours, expressing their desire for some consistency and ambition from the government.
“Other countries are leading the way in this area. I don’t want investments and jobs to be lost to the European Union and Asia; I want them to stay here. This requires a government that sticks to its plans.”
