While attempting to showcase his basketball prowess in China, California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s experience didn’t go quite as planned.
Last month, Newsom embarked on a weeklong official trip to China, where he focused on climate action. As part of the trip, Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, visited the Beijing Yuying School. In addition to his official duties, Newsom also engaged in a friendly basketball game, which caught the attention of social media users.
The viral video captures the moment when Newsom accidentally collided with a student while dribbling the ball. Both individuals fell to the ground, eliciting laughter and reactions from the onlookers.
With a grin, Newsom offered reassurance to the student, saying, “I got you,” as they both stood up, unharmed. Newsom’s representative confirmed the lack of injuries sustained by the student.
During his visit to China, Newsom traveled to various cities, including Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, as well as the provinces of Guangdong and Jiangsu. The purpose of the trip, as stated by Newsom’s office in a post on X, formerly Twitter, was to focus on climate action, economic development, tourism, and combatting xenophobia.
Newsom had the opportunity to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, during which he extended an invitation for Jinping to attend next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in San Francisco, as reported by Politico.
In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Newsom emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive relationship between the US and China, stating, “Divorce is not an option. We have to define the terms of the future. We have to live together across our differences. I don’t want to see this relationship deteriorate. It services no one. We are interdependent.”
