California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) responded to Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s renewed calls for increased fossil fuel production on Thursday.
Ramaswamy has emerged as one of the most prominent climate change deniers in the 2024 race, criticizing Democratic efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a “wet blanket on the economy.” Meanwhile, Newsom recently spoke at the United Nations to condemn the oil and gas industry for decades of deception and denial.
Ramaswamy used this opportunity to criticize the governor’s message, arguing that the climate change agenda is unrelated to climate and more about allowing China to catch up to the U.S.
“Drill. Frack. Use Coal,” Ramaswamy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Embrace Nuclear.”
Newsom wasn’t taking it lying down.
“Keep auditioning for the hall of fame for the most ignorant analysis of science,” Newsom replied. “Your coal agenda is just as absurd as your 9/11 theories.”
The governor was referring to Ramaswamy’s comments questioning the government’s report on the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
California has been at the forefront of state-driven efforts to combat climate change.
Earlier this month, Newsom announced his intention to sign a groundbreaking climate bill that requires major companies to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions. This shift will have significant implications for both California and global climate action.
As the world’s fifth-largest economy, California publicly disclosing the carbon emissions associated with businesses in the state will provide environmental context for many major companies and their operations.
