Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida has criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from California, accusing him of gaslighting fellow Republicans and implying that McCarthy has no real intention of impeaching President Joe Biden. Gaetz made these comments during an interview with MSNBC’s Ari Melber, stating that if McCarthy were serious about impeachment, he would subpoena Hunter Biden for answers. Gaetz further described the lack of seriousness within his party’s leadership, referring to it as “failure theater” without any real accountability.
On Tuesday, McCarthy unilaterally directed House committees to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, claiming that Republicans had discovered credible allegations of a “culture of corruption” within the White House. These allegations primarily focus on foreign payments made to Hunter Biden, the president’s son, including during Biden’s tenure as vice president. However, these claims have been exaggerated by a far-right faction within the Republican Party, which includes Gaetz.
The White House has strongly refuted these claims, calling them “unprecedented” and “unfounded.” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the allegations have been actively disproven and labeled the entire situation as a political stunt.
Despite McCarthy’s announcement, Gaetz belittled the impeachment plans, dismissing it as a mere “baby step” and comparing it to previous illusions and mirages created by McCarthy. In response, McCarthy has called Gaetz a liar and pointed to an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of Gaetz’s sexual misconduct and drug use.
