Funny Cide, the celebrated Kentucky Derby and Preakness victor, passes away at age 23

Funny Cide, the beloved racehorse who captured the hearts of fans by winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 2003, has sadly passed away at the age of 23. He succumbed to complications from colic at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, where he spent his last 15 years. Sackatoga Stable, the group of 10 friends from upstate New York who owned Funny Cide, expressed their sorrow over his loss on Twitter, thanking the Kentucky Horse Park for providing him with a wonderful retirement. They emphasized that their sadness is beyond words.

Funny Cide had a successful career, winning 11 out of 38 races and earning a total of $3,529,412. As a 2-year-old, he remained undefeated in all three starts. Although he faced some losses the following year, his performance in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct caught the attention of many. In that race, he narrowly lost to Empire Maker, who later became the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby. Trained by Barclay Tagg, Funny Cide defied the odds and triumphed over Empire Maker in the Kentucky Derby, becoming the first New York-bred horse to achieve this feat.

Following his Derby victory, Funny Cide and jockey Jose Santos secured an impressive win in the Preakness, bringing them one step closer to capturing the elusive Triple Crown. However, their hopes were dashed in the Belmont Stakes when Empire Maker emerged victorious, leaving Funny Cide to finish third. Despite this disappointment, Funny Cide’s racing career was marked by the unconventional-yet-charming presence of his loyal group of owners, who famously attended his races aboard a school bus.

Funny Cide’s legacy will forever be remembered as a testament to his determination and the passion he inspired in others. His loss is felt deeply by the horse racing community and beyond.
