From Finland’s Party-Loving PM to Global Change Advocate: Sanna Marin Departs as MP to Join Tony Blair’s Institute

Former Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, has stepped down as chair of the centre-left Social Democrats and plans to resign from Parliament. At the age of 34, Marin became the world’s youngest prime minister in 2019, gaining international attention and raising Finland’s profile. Marin is now leaving her political career behind to join Tony Blair’s Institute for Global Change as a ‘Strategic Counsellor’. The exact salary for this position has not been disclosed, however, Finnish prime ministers receive a minimum of €14,842 per month. Marin’s resignation as an MP comes after a challenging four years in office, marked by controversies including nightclubbing during the pandemic, hosting private parties at her official residence, and voluntarily taking a negative drug test following the leak of a party video. Despite her global popularity and influence, Marin faced defeat in the April elections due to voter concerns over issues such as immigration and a growing public deficit. In her new role, Marin will advise political leaders on reform programs in multiple countries. The think tank was established in 2017 by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair with a mission to combat authoritarian populism and advise on policy decisions. Marin’s last speech as party chair focused on holding Russia accountable for aggression and war crimes, and she called for support in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Marin thanked her party for their support and will formally hand over leadership to the new chair.
