Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year-old Palestinian American who was tragically stabbed to death on Saturday, was laid to rest on Monday after a heart-wrenching funeral held at an Illinois mosque. The service, which coincided with the first court appearance of the man charged with his murder and hate crimes, saw emotional mourners and speakers paying tribute to Wadea. “Wadea is just a child, and he is not the only one facing this kind of attack,” expressed Mosque Foundation Imam Jamal Said to the grieving crowd. The bereaved father of the boy, Odey Al-Fayoume, expressed his hope that his son’s death would serve as a catalyst for finding a solution to the ongoing issues in their homeland. “I am here as a father, not as a politician or religious scholar. I am here as a father whose son’s rights were violated,” he said in Arabic.
Joseph Czuba made his initial court appearance on Monday, where he was denied release until his trial. As reported by NBC News, the judge appointed him an attorney. When asked if he understood the charges against him, Czuba replied with a simple “Yes, sir.” He has been sent back to Joliet jail and will make his next court appearance on October 30, according to WMAQ.
