A Florida family has been sentenced by a federal judge in Miami for selling a toxic industrial bleach as a fake COVID-19 cure through their online church. The judge sentenced Jonathan Grenon, 37, and Jordan Grenon, 29, to 12 years and seven months in prison, while Mark Grenon, 66, and Joseph Grenon, 36, received five years each, according to court records. In July, all four were found guilty by a jury of conspiring to defraud the United States and deliver misbranded drugs, according to the AP. Despite representing themselves, the Grenons chose not to speak during the two-day trial.
Prosecutors accused the Grenons of being “con men” and “snake-oil salesmen,” stating that their Genesis II Church of Health and Healing in Bradenton sold $1 million worth of their supposed Miracle Mineral Solution. The family marketed the solution in videos as a cure for various diseases, including COVID-19, Alzheimer’s, autism, brain cancer, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis. However, the substance they were selling was actually chlorine dioxide, which, when ingested, becomes a bleach commonly used for industrial purposes. The Food and Drug Administration warns that consuming such a solution is equivalent to drinking bleach and can be deadly.
A federal judge in Miami had previously ordered the church to cease selling the substance in 2020, but the Grenons disregarded the order. While Jonathan and Jordan Grenon were arrested in Bradenton, Mark and Joseph Grenon fled to Colombia, where they were eventually apprehended and extradited back to the United States. In addition to the fraud convictions, Jonathan and Jordan Grenon were also found guilty of violating court orders that prohibited the sale of the Miracle Mineral Solution in 2020. As a condition of their extradition, the US authorities dropped similar contempt charges against Mark and Joseph Grenon.
