Experience Ultimate Luxury: Enjoy Tennis and Relax by a Private Pool in a €2.9m Dream Coastal Home

A Waterford couple embarked on a remarkable home improvement journey that involved the addition of an indoor leisure complex and tennis court, according to Alison Gill’s article. The town of Tramore was abuzz in January 1989 when the British cargo vessel, Gladonia, became stranded in Tramore Bay during a severe storm. The vessel was eventually refloated through a joint effort by the RNLI and town residents. Inspired by this historic event, local businessman Freddie Piper decided to name his new home after the ship. However, when Freddie and his wife Mary started a family, they realized that the current home layout no longer suited their needs. Thus began a major renovation project, which took three years to complete, resulting in their dream home.

Featuring a floor area of 7,225 sq ft, a swimming pool, gym, and outdoor tennis court, the house is truly a dream come true for most individuals. However, what sets it apart is that it’s not just an aesthetically pleasing home to be admired from a distance—the Pipers wanted to create a space that would be used and enjoyed by their family and friends. As Mary explains, every room is utilized, and with their children growing up and inviting their friends over, there is no longer a designated “good” room. The house is always filled with energy and activity.

Stepping onto the property, you’ll find a grand driveway flanked by lawns, leading up to the front of the house with its remarkable five pitched roofs and three balconies. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a grand hallway adorned with marble floor tiles and a magnificent handcrafted mahogany staircase. The main reception room with its bay windows offers stunning views of the sea. The kitchen, featuring a dining area and a more casual living space, is located on the opposite side of the house.

However, what truly sets this property apart is the private family leisure complex designed and built by the Pipers. This incredible facility includes a 15-meter heated swimming pool, a fully-equipped home gym, and a spa area with a sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi. Additionally, there are two shower rooms, underfloor heating, and three double French doors that open out to a patio. But that’s not all—stepping to the back of the house, you’ll find a full-sized Savannah tennis court, providing even more opportunities for leisure and recreation.

Mary describes how their home became an even more special place during the recent lockdown. With the beach just a walk away and the tennis court and gym right at their doorstep, the family made the most of their incredible home and amenities. She shares how every aspect of the house, from the stunning sea views to the well-utilized gym, became a source of joy and gratitude.

The kitchen, built by local craftsman Garrett Dillon, pays homage to the home’s namesake, Gladonia. The units are made of walnut and maple, with a circular island at the center, evoking a nautical feel. The kitchen also features a small dining area and a secret door leading to a utility room. Adjacent to the kitchen is the formal dining room with its vaulted ceiling and timber trusses, which opens out to the patio overlooking Tramore beach.

As you make your way upstairs, the master bedroom offers unparalleled sea views. Mary describes this room as the perfect spot to unwind while taking in the picturesque coastal scenery. The master bedroom also includes a dressing room with bespoke units by Garrett Dillon and access to a balcony. The ensuite bathroom features a rainforest shower and a whirlpool Jacuzzi bath. The second and third bedrooms are also ensuite and boast balconies and walk-in wardrobes. The fourth bedroom features an ensuite shower room.

Despite the impressive features and luxurious amenities the house offers, for Mary, the true highlight is the mesmerizing bay view that greets her every morning. She emphasizes that everything else in the house is secondary; the magnificent vista from their home grounds and the ever-changing seascape bring grounding and uplifting moments. The Pipers invested in storm-proof windows due to the property’s proximity to the sea, and during Storm Ophelia, they were able to witness the strength and durability of their windows firsthand.

The property’s location is also a significant advantage. A five-minute stroll to the swimming area of the beach and another five-minute walk into town will take you to various bars and restaurants. The home is conveniently situated, with Dublin Airport just a two-hour drive away via the M9 and Cork approximately one hour and 45 minutes away.

As Freddie enters retirement and their children move on to college, the Pipers feel that the time is right to embark on their next adventure. They want to sell their beloved Gladonia and ensure that the property finds new owners who will appreciate and enjoy everything it has to offer. While they will undoubtedly miss their home, they look forward to the future with fond memories and excitement for the next chapter of their lives.

Griffin Auctioneers has listed Gladonia with an asking price of €2.9 million.
