The White Shoal Light, the tallest lighthouse on Lake Michigan, has launched an exciting contest that involves four messages in bottles being thrown into the Great Lakes. These bottles contain unique offers for a complimentary stay at the historic lighthouse. This captivating initiative is brought to you by the White Shoal Light Historical Preservation Society.
Situated approximately 20 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge in Lake Michigan, the offshore White Shoal Light stands proudly as the tallest lighthouse in the Great Lakes.
These enchanting messages in bottles, gently dropped into the Mackinac Straits, hold the heartfelt words of four descendants of George Keller, a renowned lightkeeper. Each message reveals a different offer for a complimentary stay, catering to one, two, or up to five individuals.
This delightful contest pays homage to the historical significance of the Armistice Day Blizzard in November 1940. During this tempestuous event, Keller and a fellow lightkeeper cast a message in a bottle into the water as a precautionary measure in case they did not survive the storm.
Miraculously, both men emerged unscathed, and their poignant message was discovered a few weeks later by a fisherman near Gros Cap, Michigan.
“When we realized the connection between these four family members and their story, we thought it would be a remarkable way to commemorate their experience,” shared Jill Ore, the head lighthouse keeper for White Shoal, in an interview with MLive.
