MINNEAPOLIS — Following a disappointing 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on “Monday Night Football” at U.S. Bank Stadium, quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner engaged in a private conversation in the locker room.
Warner, draped in towels and studying the stat sheets, meticulously examined the evidence of what went wrong.
Purdy, having just completed his media obligations, made his way back to the locker room to retrieve his suitcase. However, he made a detour and approached Warner. The quarterback’s face displayed clear disappointment after throwing two interceptions during the game. With no cameras or media members nearby, the two engaged in a meaningful discussion.
Purdy initiated the conversation, expressing his self-criticism for the loss. Then, it was Warner’s turn. Although his voice didn’t carry outside their private exchange, Warner turned to face Purdy and shared words that appeared passionate and impactful.
“He’s clearly being hard on himself and placing blame on his shoulders,” Warner revealed in an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area, referring to their conversation. “I wanted him to know that’s not the case. It’s not just about him. I have complete confidence in Brock and what he brings to this team.”
Warner’s assessment is accurate. There were significant mistakes made in all aspects of the game, including the defense. Purdy expressed gratitude for Warner’s support after a performance he believed he needed to take ownership of.
“He reminded me that we all need to step up on both sides of the ball,” Purdy shared with NBC Sports Bay Area. “We will improve. Everything will be okay.”
The 49ers have a short week to regroup before facing the Cincinnati Bengals at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday. Amidst this difficult stretch, one key factor that will help the team rebound from two consecutive losses is the unwavering support displayed among the players.
Rather than pointing fingers, the roster collectively takes responsibility for their mistakes, exemplified by the supportive exchange between Purdy and Warner.
