Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama’s involvement in recent years has primarily revolved around providing general narrative guidance and character designs for various projects within the franchise. However, his role in the upcoming animated series Dragon Ball Daima from Toei Animation will be much more hands-on.
Toei Animation made the exciting announcement during this year’s New York Comic Con that Dragon Ball Daima is currently in production. The new series will feature classic characters from Dragon Ball Z like Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma as children, reminiscent of Goku’s transformation in Dragon Ball GT.
During a panel about the new show, executive producer Akio Iyoku emphasized Toriyama’s deep involvement in the production process and teased the inclusion of brand new episodes for the storyline.
Although little is known about the plot of Daima, Toei Animation has released an intriguing trailer. The trailer suggests that the show may explore a meta approach, with a villain who is aware of Goku’s extensive history in different Dragon Ball anime and manga. The reasons behind the characters appearing as children remain unclear, leaving the question of who may have used the dragon balls to make this happen unanswered.
While plot details are scarce, the visually stunning animation showcased in the trailer and Toriyama’s involvement suggest that Dragon Ball Daima will deliver a more impactful story than GT did. Fans can anticipate the series to premiere in the fall of next year.
