Barrymore initially announced the return of “The Drew Barrymore Show” on September 10, despite the ongoing strikes by writers and actors. This decision led to protests and picketing from the Writers Guild of America outside her New York studio.

The strike, which has been ongoing for over four months, is a campaign for better pay and protections in the streaming era. The Screen Actors Guild also started their own strike in July, advocating for improved residual pay from streaming services. Three Writers Guild of America writers employed by “The Drew Barrymore Show” participated in the picketing.

On Instagram, Barrymore expressed her hope for a resolution to the strike and apologized for any inconvenience caused. However, her representatives have not yet responded to requests for further comment.

CBS had initially announced the premiere of the new season of “The Drew Barrymore Show” on September 18. The company continues to stand by Barrymore’s decision to pause production.

During the taping of the show, WGA protesters and picketers greeted attendees with chants criticizing CBS and expressing disappointment in Barrymore. Some audience members were given WGA support pins. Two fans wearing WGA pins were asked to leave the taping due to security reasons.

The WGA East’s Instagram account stated that any writing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” during the strike violates WGA rules and will be picketed. Furthermore, Barrymore’s invitation to host the next National Book Awards ceremony has been rescinded due to her decision to resume production.
