Narges Mohammadi, an imprisoned activist in Iran, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless efforts in combating the oppression of women. The announcement was made by Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, in Oslo. Mohammadi’s commitment to the cause of women’s rights and her fight against systematic discrimination and oppression were recognized by the prestigious award. Notably, Mohammadi was apprehended by authorities after attending a memorial for a victim of violent protests in 2019. Her case has garnered international attention and calls for review, with Mohammadi having faced multiple imprisonments and harsh sentences throughout her activism, according to the AP.
Before her imprisonment, Mohammadi held the position of vice president at the Defenders of Human Rights Center, a banned organization in Iran. She has had a close association with Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the founder of the center. Ebadi was forced to leave Iran following the disputed re-election of then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009, which sparked widespread protests and a subsequent crackdown by authorities. In recognition of her contributions, Mohammadi was awarded the 2018 Andrei Sakharov Prize. However, in 2022, she was given an eight-year prison sentence and 70 lashes after being tried in just five minutes.
The Nobel Committee revealed that Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, convicted five times, and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes by the Iranian regime. The committee also acknowledged the numerous demonstrations held against the discriminatory and oppressive policies aimed at women by Iran’s theocratic regime in the previous year. This Nobel Peace Prize not only honors Mohammadi, but also recognizes the efforts of the countless individuals who have stood up against the injustices perpetrated by the regime.
