NEW YORK, United States – Elon Musk, the owner of social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has revealed his consideration of filing a lawsuit against a prominent anti-defamation group. Musk claims that the organization’s accusations of anti-Semitism have resulted in significant revenue loss for X.
On Monday evening, Musk accused the US-based Jewish organization of making baseless complaints against him and X, resulting in the withdrawal of advertisers. In a post on X, Musk stated, “To restore our platform’s reputation regarding anti-Semitism, it seems filing a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League is our only option… oh the irony!” He went on to state, “Based on feedback from advertisers, it appears that ADL is primarily responsible for our revenue decline,” and mentioned that the group could potentially be held accountable for causing a loss of approximately $22 billion, amounting to half the company’s value.
Musk further asserted, “Advertisers avoid controversy, so all it takes for ADL to devastate our ad revenue in the US and Europe is to make baseless accusations.” This statement was part of a lengthy thread in which Musk clarified his support for free speech while expressing his strong opposition to anti-Semitism.
The Anti-Defamation League declined to comment on Musk’s legal threats but responded to the trending hashtag #BanTheADL on the platform.
Musk, who purchased Twitter last year and rebranded it as X, has faced criticism for liking posts associated with the hashtag.
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt addressed the situation, stating in an email to AFP, “It is deeply concerning that Elon Musk engaged with a highly toxic, anti-Semitic campaign on his platform over the weekend… This behavior is not only alarming and reckless but also dangerous and deeply irresponsible.”
The ADL claims that the hateful campaign against them commenced after the organization participated in a civil rights march marking the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.
For years, the ADL has accused Twitter of amplifying anti-Semitic hate speech and recently held meetings with top executives at X. In a report published in 2016, the organization highlighted the surge in anti-Semitic attacks against journalists on the platform, attributing it to the rhetoric during the 2016 presidential campaign. The ADL also criticized Twitter for its failure to address the issue of trolling.
Billionaire Musk has previously been accused of perpetuating anti-Semitic stereotypes, including launching attacks against Jewish philanthropist George Soros. According to the ADL and the Center for Countering Digital Hate, X has experienced a significant increase in problematic and racist content since Musk’s takeover, during which he terminated numerous employees, scaled back content moderation, and reinstated former President Donald Trump’s account.
Last month, Musk filed a lawsuit against the CCDH, accusing them of a smear campaign that harmed X’s relationship with advertisers.
