A new study reveals that an increasing number of UK drivers are envisioning London as the first-ever car-free city in the world.
The survey, conducted by communications consultancy Cut the Bull, found that some members of the public believe that cars will be banned from entering the capital by 2050.
Dan Sodergren, a futurist, strongly supports the idea of a car-less London, emphasizing the benefits it would bring to the environment and residents’ health.
He elaborates, “Like many others, I dream of a future that relies less on automobiles. This societal shift not only promises to improve our environment but also redefine our urban spaces. Imagine walkable pedestrian zones, extensive cycling paths, and an abundance of green spaces to fight climate change.”
“While the journey towards this ideal future may present challenges, the rewards will be plentiful. Equipped with technology, we must embark on this transformative journey as soon as possible.”
Cut the Bull suggests that instead of cars, Londoners would utilize e-bikes, segways, and promote walking as their primary modes of transportation.
Additionally, they predict the installation of travelators to provide effortless travel and mitigate congestion risks.
Furthermore, they propose replacing obsolete roads with more green spaces to enhance the aesthetics of London and encourage street dining.
However, despite the appeal of a car-free future and the frustrations associated with owning a car, there are dissenting opinions.
When certain areas in London implemented low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs), they faced significant backlash.
After their introduction, bollards blocking traffic were vandalized and graffitied, with one Hackney councillor receiving death threats.
However, while the topic remains divisive globally, some cities have already taken steps towards banning cars in specific areas.
In 2021, Heidelberg, Germany, announced plans to replace private cars with a fleet of hydrogen-powered buses and create “superhighways” for bicycles.
Ghent, Belgium, has also initiated similar plans, with certain parts of the city already being car-free, albeit with exceptions for authorized vehicles and taxis.
