A university professor, Dr. Joseph Dituri, emerged from his 100-day underwater stay at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in the Florida Keys on Friday. This groundbreaking accomplishment sets a new record for living underwater without depressurization, surpassing the previous record of 73 days, two hours, and 34 minutes set in 2014. Dr. Dituri expressed that his motivation for this endeavor was not the record itself, but rather the exploration of human tolerance for extreme environments and the underwater world.
Dr. Dituri, also known as “Dr. Deep Sea,” is a retired officer from the US Navy and holds a doctorate in biomedical engineering. Guinness World Records has recognized him as the official record holder. The Marine Resources Development Foundation, which owns the lodge, plans to seek certification from Guinness for Dr. Dituri’s 100-day milestone. This initiative, named “Project Neptune 100,” was organized by the foundation to study the physiological and psychological effects of prolonged exposure to extreme pressure and isolation.
Project Neptune 100 is expected to contribute valuable insights for ocean researchers and future long-term missions involving astronauts. Throughout his underwater stay, Dr. Dituri conducted daily experiments and measurements to monitor his body’s response to increased pressure. He also engaged with over 5,000 students from 12 countries through online interactions, taught a course at the University of South Florida, and welcomed more than 60 visitors to the underwater habitat.
Dr. Dituri plans to present his findings from Project Neptune 100 at the World Extreme Medicine Conference in Scotland this November. His achievement highlights the importance of preserving and protecting our marine environment, as well as the potential for pushing human limits in extreme environments.
