The FBI’s annual crime report released Monday reveals that while violent crime in the US decreased last year to pre-pandemic levels, property crimes saw a substantial rise. It’s important to note that some law enforcement agencies did not provide data for the report. However, changes in data collection methods for the 2022 numbers improved accuracy, representing 83.3% of agencies and 93.5% of the population. In comparison, last year’s numbers only covered 62.7% of agencies and represented 64.8% of Americans.
According to the AP, violent crime dropped by 1.7%, including a 6.1% decrease in murder and non-negligent manslaughter. Rape decreased by 5.4%, and aggravated assault dropped by 1.1%. However, robbery increased by 1.3%. The violent crime rate in 2022, at 380.7 per 100,000 people, was slightly better than in 2019, which was 380.8 per 100,000 people—the year before the pandemic struck the US.
Richard Rosenfeld, a criminal justice professor emeritus at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, stated that the decrease in violence indicates a return to normalcy after the significant disruptions caused by the pandemic. Despite this decline, property crimes surged by 7.1%, with motor vehicle thefts experiencing the largest increase at 10.9%. Carjackings increased by 8.1% compared to 2021, with the majority involving assailants armed with weapons. Over a quarter of carjackings resulted in injuries to victims.

The report also revealed that while the number of adult victims of fatal gun violence decreased by 6.6%, the estimated number of juvenile victims increased by 11.8%. Advocates for gun safety criticize the relaxation of gun laws, particularly in conservative-leaning states. Assualts on law enforcement officers rose by 1.8% compared to 2021, with an estimated 31,400 out of 102,100 resulting in injuries—a 1.7% increase from the previous year. Overall, violent crime remains significantly lower than the levels seen in the 1990s.
