Discover the Identity of the Fearless Man with a Sledgehammer Who Scaled an Elementary School Fence

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has identified the 49-year-old man who died while attempting to climb a fence at a Long Beach elementary school carrying a sledgehammer. This incident occurred in the 6700 block of Orizaba Avenue, near the Artesia (91) Freeway, after responding to a home invasion report.

Upon arrival, responding officers were directed to McKinley Elementary School, where the suspect, John Thompson, had entered the school’s parking lot with the sledgehammer. A group of men detained Thompson as he tried to enter the campus. Officers handcuffed him upon arrival.

Unfortunately, Thompson became unresponsive shortly after the arrest. Life-saving measures were administered, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Long Beach Fire Department paramedics. The Department of Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. Homicide detectives are investigating this as an in-custody death since Thompson died while handcuffed.

Police clarified that no use of force was employed during the arrest.
