Florida Governor Ron DeSantis voices his opposition to receiving refugees from Gaza in the United States, following a suggestion made by a left-wing Democrat. DeSantis, who is running for the Republican 2024 presidential nomination, stated, “I will say, and I don’t know what Biden’s going to do, but we cannot accept people from Gaza into this country as refugees. I am not going to do that.”
DeSantis made these remarks one week after the Hamas terror attack against Israel, which resulted in the death of over 1,300 Israelis. In response, Israel launched a counterattack against Hamas in Gaza, leading to a significant displacement of the population. According to the United Nations, over 423,000 Gaza citizens have been displaced.
UN REFUGEE AGENCY: GAZA BECOMING A ‘HELLHOLE’ ON THE ‘BRINK OF COLLAPSE’
Under the Biden administration, the United States has increased the number of refugee resettlements from 18,000, as set by the Trump administration, to 125,000. However, last year, the U.S. did not come close to reaching that cap. Of the FY 2024 allocation, 30,000-45,000 is designated for refugees from the Near East and South Asia.
Concerns have been raised by Republicans about the potential intake of refugees from Gaza. Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-NY, expressed his support for accepting refugees from the area, emphasizing the high number of children in Gaza. In response, DeSantis argued against allowing these refugees into the U.S., citing their anti-Israeli views and the reluctance of Arab states to take them. He stated, “The Arab states should be taking them if you have refugees, you don’t fly people and import them into the United States of America.”

DeSantis also pointed out the pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel protests that have occurred not only in the U.S. but also in other Western countries. He emphasized that individuals who have a dislike for the country should not be allowed to enter the United States.
