Dartmouth College’s head football coach, Buddy Teevens, tragically passed away six months after a serious bike accident, as reported by CNN. A statement from Teevens’ family, released by Dartmouth University, expressed their heartbreak and shared that Teevens peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones. The injuries from the accident proved insurmountable for the 66-year-old coach. Teevens was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in St. Augustine, Florida, on March 16. In April, his wife, Kirsten, had announced that Teevens had suffered spinal cord injuries and had to undergo a right leg amputation.
Teevens was a former quarterback for Dartmouth and even earned the Ivy League Player of the Year award in 1978. He also played for the college’s competitive hockey team. With a coaching career spanning 22 seasons at Dartmouth, Teevens achieved a record of 117-101-2. Overall, his head coaching record stands at 151-178-2, according to CBS Sports. The President of Dartmouth, Sian Leah Beilock, and the school’s athletic director, Mike Harrity, highlighted Teevens’ efforts in making the sport of football safer. They mentioned his focus on technique and the development of the Mobile Virtual Player, a robotic tackling dummy used by college programs and NFL teams, at the Thayer School of Engineering in their memorial letter.
Sammy McCorkle, who has been acting as head coach since Teevens’ accident, informed the team of his death after Tuesday’s practice. Dartmouth University stated that the game against Lehigh on Saturday will continue as planned, and there will be a moment of silence and a gathering of remembrance after the game to honor the late coach. The Teevens family appreciated the support and love they received throughout this difficult journey. Teevens is survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren.
