Daily Grind coffee shop closes doors in downtown Troy

TROY – After almost forty years, beloved Capital Region coffeehouse The Daily Grind has closed its doors at its location at 46 Third Street.

Lee Cohen owns the business with his sister Barrye Cohen, whose husband’s declining health is part of the reason for the closure. After more than four decades in the business, they both decided it was time to let the Troy location go.

“We’re getting a little older and it’s getting a little harder and we have talked about this for a long time,” Lee, 69, said.

The brick-and-mortar cafe, which opened in 1984, has been teetering toward its closure for the past several years, transitioning from being open seven days a week to just three. Because of this, Lee said there were only a couple of employees.

In reminiscing on The Daily Grind’s evolution, Lee said it was incredible that the small business had originally opened its doors in 1976 at a time when “nobody in this area had heard of gourmet and roasted coffee” and survived the evolution of Starbucks and other big corporations.
