The Red Sox released a statement on behalf of former pitcher Tim Wakefield and his wife, Stacy, on Thursday. The team issued a press release after questions were raised about Wakefield’s health when Curt Schilling, another former Red Sox pitcher and ex-teammate of Wakefield’s, publicly disclosed information without the family’s permission.

Here’s the full statement from the Red Sox:

“We have been made aware of the inquiries about the health condition of Tim and Stacy Wakefield. Unfortunately, this personal information has been made public without their consent. Their health is a deeply personal matter that they intended to keep private as they undergo treatment and work towards fighting this disease. Tim and Stacy are grateful for the support and love they have received, and kindly request privacy during this time.”

Schilling revealed some details about Wakefield’s health on a recent podcast. While the Red Sox statement does not confirm any specific illness, it suggests that the Wakefields are facing a serious medical situation.

Tim Wakefield, aged 57, had a successful 19-season career in Major League Baseball, with 17 seasons spent with the Red Sox. He played alongside Curt Schilling from 2004-2007, during which time the Red Sox won the World Series in both 2004 and 2007. Wakefield, known for his knuckleball, achieved 200 wins and made 627 appearances before retiring in 2011.
