Travis Kelce’s previous comments about starting a family have caused controversy amidst his ongoing relationship with Taylor Swift.
The 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs player initially made these remarks about having children during a February 2023 episode of the podcast he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce called New Heights. The resurfacing of this episode coincided with a source’s claim to Yahoo Entertainment that Swift and Travis Kelce have discussed having kids within the next year.
During the podcast episode, Jason asked his mother Donna, which of her two sons she was “rooting for” as the Eagles and Chiefs were about to compete in the Super Bowl. Jason, who has three children with his wife Kylie Kelce, mentioned that Donna previously expressed her preference for Travis because he had given her grandchildren.
In response to Jason’s question, Donna humorously asked who he would choose to save if she and her husband were stranded in the ocean. They continued the playful banter until Travis jokingly mentioned his desire to start his own family. However, Jason immediately discouraged him, and Donna advised him to wait until he finds the right person.
Despite the pushback, Travis persisted in his plan, light-heartedly stating that he wanted kids so his mom could love him again. This comment, along with his use of the term “breeders,” received criticism on social media, with fans regarding it as sexist and disrespectful.
Many individuals also questioned the claims about Swift and Travis planning to have children soon, citing Swift’s busy schedule with her ongoing Eras Tour until November 2024.
Shortly after the controversy, Swift and Travis seemingly confirmed their romance by publicly attending one of Kelce’s games together. The couple has been photographed together on various occasions, including a recent date in New York City after their surprise appearances on Saturday Night Live. Despite some misinterpreted interactions with Swift’s security, Travis clarified the situation and denied any aggression.
