June 25 (UPI) — The Criterion Channel, renowned for curating and publishing influential classic and contemporary films from across the globe since its establishment in 1984, will soon release over a dozen films that precursed the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its profound impact on humanity on its independent streaming platform, the Criterion Channel.

Starting on July 1, these films will be made available to the audience, as stated in a press release here.

The release of this film collection is timely, considering that AI is gradually emerging from the realm of science fiction and becoming an integral part of our everyday lives, elucidated the Criterion Collection.

Concerns regarding the potential implications of AI on humanity have been mounting, particularly due to recent advancements in generative AI, including the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool. In response, Senator Chuck Schumer has initiated efforts to regulate artificial intelligence, while President Joe Biden recently engaged with AI developers in San Francisco to discuss risk management.

The Criterion Collection describes these films as explorations into the imagination and apprehension surrounding this futuristic realm of AI: “the brave new world that has been envisaged with all its awe and apprehension.”

The collection includes notable films such as the 2001 movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence, featuring Haley Joel Osment as a prototype android programmed to experience love in a post-apocalyptic 22nd-century world ravaged by climate change.

Another significant addition is the 1995 animated film Ghost in the Shell, which originated from a manga of the same name. Set in a near-future, the film delves into the deconstruction of human consciousness as the human brain can be transferred into mechanical shells, while an AI project manipulates politics. Notably, the collection chose the animated version over the 2017 remake starring Scarlett Johansson.

Speaking of Scarlett Johansson, she does make an appearance in the collection for her voice role in Her, the Oscar-winning 2013 masterpiece by director Spike Jonze. In this film, Johansson lends her voice to the world’s first artificially intelligent operating system, with Joaquin Phoenix’s character eventually falling in love with it.

From the 1974 films Dark Star and Zardoz to the more recent After Yang and Life After BOB: The Chalice Study released in 2021, the Criterion Collection offers a diversified selection of feature films. Additionally, the collection will also showcase Björk’s 1999 music video for her renowned song “All Is Full of Love” and two other short films.
