Ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., could potentially re-enter the race for House speaker, this time with Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as his assistant speaker, according to insider sources.
Two highly reliable sources informed Fox News Digital on Tuesday evening about a proposal that is under consideration to reinstate McCarthy as speaker and promote Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to the role of assistant speaker.
Jordan had initially been the second choice for the House GOP as speaker-designate, but he was forced to withdraw from the race after failing to secure enough votes on three separate occasions. He was subsequently removed from the position in a Republican conference meeting through an anonymous ballot vote.
When questioned about the idea, McCarthy simply responded to reporters by stating, “Some members are discussing it.”
Fox News Digital attempted to inquire about the actively discussed plan from Jordan, but he chose not to answer.
According to NBC News, McCarthy himself proposed the idea of re-entering the race. This development comes as Republicans have been unable to fill the speaker’s position for nearly a month, with three consecutive nominees facing opposition within the party.
It remains uncertain whether the most recent nominee, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., stands a better chance than his predecessors. The first nominee, Rep. Steve Scalise, faced opposition from allies of Jordan. Scalise and McCarthy’s supporters then hindered Jordan’s nomination. Finally, former President Donald Trump launched a full-blown attack on Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., opposing his nomination.
The House is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday at noon for a complete floor vote on Johnson’s bid for speakership.
