The Philippine Blu Girls suffered a 6-4 defeat against Chinese Taipei in a warm-up match before the bronze medal showdown in the Hangzhou Asian Games women’s softball competition.
Despite staging comebacks twice to level the game, the Blu Girls conceded two runs in the sixth inning, which ultimately made the difference in the final match of the super round at the Shaoxing Baseball and Softball Center.
Both teams will face each other again on Monday, with the Blu Girls aiming to secure their first-ever podium finish in the continental meet.
The Blu Girls finished fourth twice in the 2014 edition in Incheon and the 2018 tournament in Jakarta.
This will also be coach Ana Santiago’s team’s last opportunity to secure a victory against Chinese Taipei this year, having previously lost twice in the Women’s Softball Asia Cup, including a 5-0 defeat in the battle for third place.
The Blu Girls trailed 3-0 after two innings, but Alaiza Talisik’s single brought Nicole Hammoude home in the third. In the fifth, Cristy Joy Roa’s single to left field scored Hammoude and Sky Ellazar, tying the game at 3-3.
Chinese Taipei regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, with Chia Wen Shen scoring from third base on a groundout by Chia Yun Chang for the second out.
In the top of the sixth, the Philippines responded with Hammoude’s double, bringing Mary Joy Maguad home. Maguad reached first on a hit by pitch, making it a 4-4 tie.
However, Chinese Taipei took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a single by Chih Ying Lin, allowing Chia Hui Ko to score from second base for a 5-4 lead. Lin advanced to second before touching home on Hsuan Liu’s single for an insurance run.
The seventh and final inning saw Talisik flying out to left field, Roa striking out, and Charlotte Sales grounding out, confirming the Blu Girls’ defeat.
