It’s officially fall, which means it’s time to refresh your wardrobe.

As the seasons change, you may find yourself reevaluating your style and pulling out pants and sweaters from the corners of your closet. But shopping for new clothes can be both exciting and daunting, especially when you have new trends and a limited budget in mind.

In her new book, “Style for Everybody,” celebrity stylist Kim Appelt shares the basics of fashion and provides guidance on how to shop for and curate custom looks based on your personal style, body type, and lifestyle.

In one chapter of her book, Appelt, who has 12 years of industry experience, highlights three common mistakes people make while shopping for new clothes.

Buying the wrong size

Appelt emphasizes that focusing more on the size label than the fit of a garment is a mistake since sizing can vary depending on the brand and region.

“You could be an extra small in a fast-fashion brand but just squeeze into a large in a European label,” she wrote in her book.

So when you’re in the dressing room, don’t worry about the size tag – focus on how the garment fits. If it doesn’t fit well, try another size.

Wandering aimlessly

While aimlessly wandering through malls and stores can be fun, it’s not helpful when you have specific items in mind. Appelt suggests making a list of the items you need and the colors you prefer to wear. Then, identify the ideal store for those items and head straight to it.

Going over budget

Another common shopping mistake is buying more than you intended, according to Appelt.

“Shopping causes a dopamine release – we’ve all been there. You walk into a store looking for a white T-shirt but get caught up in all the other gorgeous items,” she wrote. “Suddenly you’re walking out with bags and bags of stuff you don’t need.”

This is why Appelt emphasizes the importance of making a list before you go shopping and referring back to it while browsing the aisles. It helps you stay focused on what you actually need.

Shopping for clothes can be challenging, but Appelt believes the key to fashion is self-awareness. What is your body type? What is your personal style – preppy, casual, sporty, or something else? What clothes do you need for your lifestyle? What colors make you feel good?

Once you have a clear understanding of these aspects, you can curate a wardrobe that is specifically tailored to you, as Appelt shared with Insider.
