Supermodel Cindy Crawford reflects on her early career and opens up about feeling objectified by Oprah Winfrey during an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1986. Crawford, who was only 20 years old at the time, recalls being asked to stand before the audience as Winfrey praised her figure. The founder of Elite Model Management, John Casablancas, who is credited with discovering Crawford, was also present.
During the interview, Winfrey asked Casablancas if Crawford had undergone any training to achieve her slim figure, which is shown in a flashback on the Apple TV+ show “The Super Models.” Crawford describes feeling like “chattel” or a “child,” expected to be seen and not heard during that moment. She admits that she didn’t fully realize the objectification until she looked back on the experience.
The docuseries, which follows the lives of ’90s supermodels like Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington, sheds light on the challenges they faced in the industry. Crawford shares that she never saw herself as special or different growing up and never even considered modeling as a career. She credits her parents for accompanying her to her first modeling appointment, despite their initial hesitations and misconceptions about the industry.
Representatives for Crawford and Winfrey have not yet responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. The Oprah Winfrey Show aired from 1986 to 2011.
