Tensions rise as eight Chinese aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday morning, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry. China has been increasing its military presence around Taiwan, despite the island’s objections. Instances of Chinese military aircraft missions near Taiwan have become nearly daily occurrences, particularly in the southwestern part of the island’s air defense identification zone.
The defense ministry reported that a total of 24 Chinese warplanes, including fighter jets and bombers, were spotted near Taiwan on Tuesday morning. Additionally, four Chinese warships joined a “joint combat readiness patrol”. In response, Taiwan deployed its own aircraft and ships to warn the Chinese, while also monitoring them with missile systems.
In a statement, the defense ministry emphasized the joint responsibility of all parties in the region to maintain safety and stability, stating that “any provocative behavior that could have negative impacts is not conducive to regional safety”.
China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control and has previously staged military drills around the island in response to perceived provocations. Taiwan’s government strongly rejects China’s sovereignty claims and vows to defend itself if necessary.
