Chicago Marathon Runner Rescues Kitten and Finds It a Forever Home
In a heartwarming turn of events at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, Sarah Bohan, a dedicated runner from Boston, chose compassion over her personal record when she spotted a stray kitten near the race course. Despite being on pace for her best-ever finish, Bohan made the selfless decision to rescue the kitten and find it a safe home.
Bohan, an animal lover and participant in the marathon representing the animal-welfare organization Team PAWS Chicago, carefully carried the tiny, scared kitten throughout the remainder of the race. Along the way, she encountered another marathon runner, Gia Nigro, who joined her in the search for someone to care for the kitten.
After unsuccessfully asking countless spectators to adopt the kitten, Bohan and Nigro finally found the perfect match in Andrea Maldonado, a cat lover who was cheering on the runners outside her brother’s barbershop. Despite already having two cats and a dog at home, Maldonado happily agreed to take in the kitten.
The next day, Maldonado reached out to PAWS Chicago, the organization for which Bohan had raised money, for a medical exam for the kitten. He was given a clean bill of health and received standard care, including vaccinations and preventive treatments.
In honor of Halloween, Maldonado and her family named the kitten Casper due to a ghost-shaped patch on his head. Casper quickly settled into his new home and has become a cherished member of the family, enjoying the company of the children and the family’s other pets.
Thanks to the compassionate actions of Sarah Bohan and the kindness of Andrea Maldonado, the stray kitten found a forever home and is now living a happy and loved life.
