Cheems, the shiba inu dog who gained internet fame through popular memes, passed away on August 18, as announced by its owners on Instagram. The beloved canine, known as Balltze, unfortunately succumbed to cancer and peacefully fell asleep during its last thoracentesis surgery.
“Ball Ball fell asleep on 18/8. During his final thoracentesis surgery on Friday morning, he peacefully drifted off. Initially, we had planned to pursue chemotherapy or other treatments following the operation, but unfortunately, it is now too late,” the owners wrote in their emotional post, accompanied by several photos of the dog.
The post continued, urging readers to focus on the joy that Balltze brought to the world. A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face, he served as a source of comfort and entertainment for many individuals during the pandemic. However, now his mission has been fulfilled.
According to the dog’s official website created by its owner, Balltze rose to fame in 2017 when his pictures went viral. Internet users quickly started referring to him as “Cheese,” which eventually evolved into his meme stage name, “Cheems” or “Cheemsburger.” One of his most famous meme appearances is ‘Swole Doge vs. Cheems’.
Balltze, who was 12 years old, resided in Hong Kong under the care of his owner Kathy. Kathy adopted him at the age of one and recognized his photogenic qualities. She would regularly share pictures of the Shiba Inu showcasing his daily moods and cuteness. Cheems’ popularity skyrocketed when an amusing photo of him became an iconic meme, often used to depict discomfort or weakness in specific situations.
The news of the meme dog’s passing deeply saddened internet users. One user expressed, “RIP buddy, you brought so much happiness to people.” Another individual remarked, “He is a legend of the internet world, a pioneer of memes, and now he is immortal. Rest in love, sweet Ball Ball. You were and will continue to be loved by billions worldwide.”
A third person shared, “I discovered this legendary dog through a meme trend. It’s heartbreaking to hear about his passing years later. He helped countless individuals get through difficult times, including 2020. His meme trend will live on as a tribute to his life and the joy he brought to everyone. Rest well, king. You will be missed.”
Another person added, “Rest easy, King. You did an exceptional job. Grateful for the countless times your round smiling face brought us joy and comfort. You will be deeply missed. Take care, Ball Ball’s parents.”
