Chancellor Guskiewicz Addresses Campus Shooting: A Message of Concern

Dear Carolina Community,

This afternoon, at 1:02 p.m., a report of shots fired in Caudill Laboratories on our prestigious campus was brought to the attention of UNC Police. Rest assured, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the suspect was successfully apprehended and is now in custody. I am relieved to inform you that an “all clear” has been issued, eliminating any immediate threat. UNC Police are diligently working together with the Chapel Hill Police Department to gather valuable information and continue their thorough response in a professional manner.

With heavy heart, I regret to inform you that one of our esteemed faculty members lost their life during the shooting incident. We are currently waiting for the confirmation that the next of kin has been notified before we can disclose further details regarding the situation.

Today’s tragic shooting in one of our cherished campus buildings has devastated me and the entire Carolina community. It is within these walls that we engage in vital activities of teaching, mentoring, and research each day. The senselessness of this act of violence not only shatters our trust but also jeopardizes the safety that we often take for granted on our campus. We are determined to mend this trust and restore a sense of security. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of our fellow faculty member, as well as anyone directly affected by this horrific act of violence.

In light of this incident, all classes and campus events scheduled for Monday, August 28 and Tuesday, August 29 have been canceled. As a precautionary measure, our campus has shifted to Condition 2 until midnight tomorrow.

Rest assured, support is readily available to those who may need it. Students, including graduate and professional students and postdocs, are encouraged to reach out to the Dean of Students team or Counseling and Psychological Services for assistance. For urgent concerns, please call 919-966-3658, the emergency protocol line. Faculty and staff are encouraged to utilize the services provided by the Employee Assistance Program. Additional counseling services and opportunities to grieve and process will be made available and further information will be provided.

I express my profound gratitude to our Emergency Operations Center and UNC Police for their efficient handling of this situation. I also extend my appreciation to our faculty, staff, and students for their cooperation, which played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our beloved campus community. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their family, and every member of the Carolina community during this difficult time. We will share more details and information as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Kevin M. Guskiewicz
Chancellor
