Several Southland schools, including some Catholic campuses, were closed for the day on Monday due to an investigation into a series of threats. However, these threats were later determined to be not credible.
The La Verne Police Department stated that Damien High School was evacuated and closed for the day on Monday morning due to a threat that was later determined to have originated from overseas and is not credible.
“Earlier this morning, the La Verne Police Department notified the Bonita Unified School District that Damien High School was being evacuated and closed for the remainder of the day in response to a threat against private schools in the area,” the police said.
After further investigation, the police confirmed that the threat came from overseas and is not credible. Therefore, the Bonita Unified schools will remain open.
Reports also indicated that a school in Claremont received an unfounded threat on Monday, as did Catholic schools in Compton and Lancaster.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles explained, “This morning, a few of our Catholic schools, along with other non-Catholic schools, received a spam email threatening school safety. This email is similar to one that was sent to schools and institutions in Europe last week, which was also found to be not credible. The purpose of these emails is to cause disruption, panic, and fear.”
The schools that received this email chose to cancel classes for the day as a precautionary measure while the matter was being investigated. The archdiocese is cooperating with law enforcement, and there is no evidence of a credible threat at Catholic schools within the archdiocese. All Catholic schools are following their usual safety protocols.
In response to the threats, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has increased patrols around schools in the area.
The sheriff’s department stated, “We are aware of the online threats to schools in LA County. Our sheriff’s stations will be conducting patrol checks at local schools throughout the day. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.”
