Media insiders, past and present, gathered on Wednesday to celebrate Michael Wolff, the provocative journalist who remains a controversial figure at the age of 70, on the release of his latest book, “The Fall: The End of Fox News and the Murdoch Dynasty.”
Wolff has faced criticism from journalism watchdogs and even appeared on “Saturday Night Live” for his loose approach to facts, as noted by the Columbia Journalism Review. However, the attendees at the Greenwich Village townhouse where the event took place seemed firmly in his corner. The gathering included columnists, reporters, editors, podcasters, and media moguls.
The guest list represented a range of political ideologies, with both conservative media pundit Ann Coulter and liberal commentator Molly Jong-Fast in attendance.
Jong-Fast joked, saying, “I’m not too good for a party,” and stating her belief that increased coverage of Fox News is a positive development.
Janice Min, co-owner of The Ankler, a Hollywood media outlet, made the journey from Los Angeles to attend the party. Despite enduring a 90-minute ride from the airport, Min expressed her contentment with white wine and canapés, affirming that it was all worth it. As a former editor of Wolff at The Hollywood Reporter, she described his latest book as “classic Michael.”
Other notable guests included Kurt Andersen, a novelist, journalist, and radio host, as well as David Haskell, the editor-in-chief of New York Magazine. Carl Bernstein, Lydia Polgreen, Michelle Goldberg, Joanna Coles, David Folkenflik, Hillary Frey, and Eric Nelson were also in attendance. Ben Smith, the editor-in-chief of Semafor, engaged in a conversation with Wolff, comparing the party to the atmosphere found within one of the author’s books.

When asked about the thesis of Wolff’s book, which suggests that Fox News is in decline, Rose commented on the network’s longstanding presence. Alec Baldwin, who was involved in a fatal shooting on a movie set in 2021, interacted with Wolff and expressed the abundance of work opportunities he has received recently.
Amidst the enjoyment of appetizers, Wolff addressed the crowd, referring to Fox News as a perpetual fixture in American political and cultural life. However, he shared a surprising revelation stating, “Well, I come with good news.” The attendees laughed in response as Wolff reassured them that the 92-year-old Rupert Murdoch, the man behind it all, was stepping down from his positions at Fox Corporation and News Corp.
