- This year’s Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta’s closing mass ascension has been canceled due to windy weather.
- Known as one of the most photographic events globally, the cancellation was necessary for the safety of balloon passengers when winds exceeded 10 mph.
Sunday marked the final day of the 51st annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, but the farewell mass ascension was delayed and ultimately canceled due to windy conditions.
Originally scheduled to start at 7 a.m., balloon pilots remained on standby for over two hours before the cancellation, as brisk winds from the north persisted.
According to launch directors, winds that surpass 10 mph pose a significant risk to ballooning.
The fiesta, drawing participants and spectators from all around the world to New Mexico’s high desert, is renowned for its captivating displays and is highly regarded as one of the most photographed events worldwide.
Over the course of nine days, both local residents and visitors were treated to a spectacular display of colorful and uniquely shaped balloons.
Since its inception in 1972, the fiesta has expanded to include a diverse group of European ballooning professionals.
